Do You Know Your SEO Links?

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

When it comes to search engine optimisation (SEO) one of the most important factors is the linking structure for your website. The better your sites linking structure the better your chance of ranking highy in search engine result pages for your chosen keywords. The difficulty with linking is that different types of links exist which not everyone understands. To understand what each link is I’ve compiled a list with descriptions for you.

External Links

External links are used to point to other websites that do not belong to your domain. A lot of people worry that external links divert traffic to other websites but in actual fact it helps strengthen SEO efforts. If the links are pointing at relevant pages on other websites then search engines will take this into account.

Internal Links

Internal links point to pages located within your website. By displaying as many links as possible to other pages on your website you will give a better experience for visitors as they may find pages that they couldn’t find before. By placing links at the bottom of your page beneath your footer you are able to strengthen your linking structure.

One Way Links

One way links are the best way of optimising your website. They are links that are coming from other places such as websites, blogs, etc. and have a big effect due to one way links being added naturally and are not by choice like external links and internal links. There are ways to persuade websites into including one way links to your website but search engines such as Google do not encourage this or condone it.

Ensure that you include these types of links in your website to give your it the best chances of ranking highly due to a strategically created linking structure.

Link Building is Still a Major Part of SEO

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

Search engine optimisation (SEO) is made up of many different sections, meta data, linking, alt tags, title tags and more. The issue that I’ve noticed recently is that some sections are being ignored due to recommendations by other websites. The problem with so many recommendations floating around the Internet is that it is hard to find the truth from the false. Linking has always been a vital part of an SEO campaign, but recently websites have started to spend more time on other things such as creating new content and less time on getting internal and external links.

It is true that Google frowns upon purchased links and spamming, but it doesn’t mean it isn’t possible. By obeying certain methods you will be able to get a high quality linking structure for your website which will help you much more than concentrating on fixing little things such as missing alt tags or adding new meta data on pages. By submitting keyword-optimised articles to a variety of news websites, getting involved in social media marketing, or implementing a Google News feed you are able to legitimately build links which will avoid your website getting penalised by search engines.

When contacting websites to request link swapping you must ensure the websites page ranking is of good quality. By using websites with page rankings of 0,1 or 2 you needn’t bother, it won’t do much for your website. By aiming for highly ranked websites you will have a much better chance of getting a higher page ranking yourself. It doesn’t matter if it’s only 1-2 websites, if they have a high page ranking then they will do your website a huge favour.

It’s easy to get plenty of links to your website once you know how, but it’s also easy to forget where your links exist. It’s essential you monitor all your links to ensure they all go to existing pages on your website, any broken links can affect your SEO campaign which means all the time spent on building links has gone to waste. If any of your links appear to be broken then it’s recommended you either contact the web master to fix the link or create a 301 redirect to another page.

Don’t believe everything you read on the web, not everyone is as clued up as others which will effect your website if you don’t research techniques thoroughly before using them.

Broken Links Damage SEO Chances

Friday, May 14th, 2010

A linking structure has always been a high priority when it comes to search engine optimisation due to it’s huge affect on rankings. The idea behind linking is the better the ranking for the page linking to your website the better it is for your website. But this can also become a huge blow to your site if the links coming in to your website lead to pages that no longer exist.

This is according to Chris Thomas of Reseo.com, who has explained in a post for ‘Smart Company’ that firms risk damaging their rankings by failing to resolve this issue quickly. The problem with trying to rectify this issue quickly may not always be down to the company, but down to the web master of the linking website. This is because some web masters may take a while to fix the link and direct it to an existing page, or may even remove the link altogether.

Mr Thomas recommends the use of 301 redirects instead of contacting the web master. By simply redirecting search engine robots and web users to another page it will help deteriorate the issue with links more or less. It has been reported in the past that 301 redirects can affect websites SEO campaigns too, so these should be a last resort if the web master doesn’t act quickly enough for your liking.

Be careful when linking with other websites, ensure that you check your links frequently in case a link does direct to an non-existent page so the issue can be resolved quickly and efficiently before search engines penalise your website.

Ensure your Press Releases are SEO Friendly

Monday, April 19th, 2010

Optimising your press releases is as easy as ABC but that doesn’t mean everyone know how to do it. By making sure your press releases are search engine optimisation friendly you will build link justice without spending money on incoming links.

Press releases allow companies to deliver news and event news to the Internet which can be found through search engines quickly. The press release should be written in such a way that it should rank highly in the search engines for your chosen keywords and help your website collect important backlinks which will help boost the websites position in the search engine rankings.

A list of keywords should be prepared before a press release is composed. Long tail keywords usually have less competition but also generate more total searches than short tailed keywords.

Your title is the key to attracting readers, the better it is the more likely you are to get more traffic to your website. The title gets massive exposure so by including a keyword in will help you optimise your press release better.

The summary of your press release should be within 250 characters and include secondary keywords to optimise weaker keywords for your press release. Combined with your titles keyword will help strengthen the article much better.

The body of the press release should exceed a minimum of 300 words, including 3-4 keywords including the keyword used in your title and summary. The body of the article is crawled by search engines and used as a description in SERP, so by ensuring proper keywords are included you will eliminate any gaps missed by missing possible opportunities. Link your important keywords to relevant pages in your site, avoiding the front page. Formatting the keywords further will help them stand out to readers.

The topic of your press release does not need to be stunning to be exciting. News happens everywhere despite the topic, so by choosing the correct topic for your press release you will target the relevant audience for your website.

The press release should be written in a users point of view, using the language that is typically discovered when searching within the chosen topic. Include the company logo for branding and insert photos, graphics, video links and any other media to help readers find out more information through other forms of media other than text.

Distribute your press release in the correct place. It’s no good dumping your release in as many submission sites as possible, by sending it to the correct places it will help your article to be found by the correct audience. By ensuring the readers make use of the information you provide they will certain to come back for more.

So remember, by ensuring your article is SEO friendly you will collect a fresh stream of traffic to your website.

Broaden Your SEO Keywords

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

When it comes to keywords in your search engine optimisation campaign, you can spend all your time trying to get it right for you and then not getting the results. It’s important that you know different variations you can use with your keywords to get better results.

You can reorder your words, add or remove words, strip words of extensions and use different forms of language such as misspellings, slang and acronyms. Each can be just as affective if used correctly, but how can each of these be used?

Reordering words: Most Internet users perform searches with more than one word, typically because it will narrow the search results to increase the likeliness of finding the correct website. If this doesn’t work then the easiest thing to do is to re-order the words and try again. This can be capitalized on by adding keywords in different orders.

Adding words: Because very few searches are through single keywords, adding specifics such as months, colours or locations can help a lot. This is one of the best ways to optimise your keywords as it will help gain the rankings before trying harder keywords.

Removing words: Because there is an amount of keywords to use before being penalised by search engines for spamming, eliminating less frequently searched keywords can help try new keywords, increasing your chance of getting better results.

Stripping back words: Internet users know that websites will use different extensions with their keywords, such as ’searching’ to ’search’ etc. By including shortened down keywords you’ve a better chance of getting higher traffic levels through missing keywords.

Misspelling, slang and acronyms: Any variation of your keywords is worth looking into, not everyone can spell every word correctly, or know the correct words to use, or are able to differentiate international variations, so by including other versions of your keywords can help target this audience.

Remember, the broader you are with your keywords the better chance you have in getting the results you deserve, so put some time aside to look into it and you may be surprised at just what you’ve been missing out on.

Search Engine Optimisation Procedure

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

Google refusing to index your website and can’t figure out why? Here’s a couple of methods you can try with your website to try and convince Google to index your website. Once indexed you will then be able to experience the benefits of having PageRank for your website. Whether the benefits be more sales or revenue from advertisement, you will definitely feel better once Google has indexed your website.

The first step you should take is to be patient. If your website is new then it will take much longer to optimise than it would with an older website. People think by creating lots of content and adding it to their website then Google will eventually index their website, this is not the case. Google has no set time period to when it will index websites, by adding more content you will only be wasting your time because Google will only retrieve the last thing added, due to it being Googles first visit.

The second step you should ensure you take is to find a well ranked website and try to get a backlink. With a backlink Google will find you website much faster. This is because the website you are linking from will be checked frequently for new content, and by finding your newly added link it will follow it to your website. Once Google has noticed your website has no PageRank it will index your website, giving you the start you need to optimise your website for SEO.

So remember, if you are struggling in getting your website cached, be patient and don’t be afraid to talk to other webmasters, some may be kinder than others.

Twitter and Shortened URL’s a Bad Idea

Friday, March 19th, 2010

Own a twitter account? Post URL’s in most of your tweets in hope that someone will visit the website? Shorten your URL’s to fit in your tweet? Bad idea.

It has been reported that it can have a negative affect on any search engine optimisation (SEO) attempt, as told by an industry figure. Aaron Schoenberger explained that URL-shorterning services offered by an increasing number of firms promise benefits, which is in fact a lie.

“The text in the backlinks built to that particular URL are directly related to its ranking in search engines. If backlinks are being built to a shortened URL and not the real URL, the impact of your Twitter efforts is significantly diminished,” explained Aaaron Schoenberger.

So if you plan on including links in your tweets, ensure you use the full URL for the website your linking, such as http://www.weblinx.biz, and shorten your tweet if you can’t fit it in, else your chances for optimising your Twitter account will become a thing of the past.

Blogs, mans new best friend?

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

Dogs have always been known as man’s best friend, but recently blogs seem to have taken this title away from them. We have the option to choose whether we want to own a dog or not, but blogs have recently become a necessity not an option. Nearly every website has realised this and taken one on, but why?

They say that dogs begin to look like their owners, but who’s to say this isn’t the same for blogs? Your blog can be personalised the way you like it, changing the look and feel with features such as themes, widgets, etc. This gives visitors a better opinion of who you are and what the blog is about; either making it or breaking it in the process.

So what about a blogs needs? Dogs and blogs must be fed! Your not expected to force a juicy steak piece at your monitor, but you are expected to feed your blog with new information on a daily basis. You don’t want your blog to be that shaggy looking blog that noone wants to look at, right? The information you feed it with must be juicy to attract new visitors, the more visitors the better. This can help give your page a better standing against other blogs, you may even get the number 1 ribbon.

Fast forwarding a few months on, you’ve won the number 1 ribbon, what are you supposed to do with your new found glory? Promote other companies (or websites) with a linking structure! You’ve earned your place in the hearts of thousands (or maybe hundreds, whos to know?), websites are more likely to be clicked now you are trusted. A blog roll can help your website collect new visitors who may have never heard of you before, optimising two websites in one – You’ve just killed two birds with one stone.

Blogs offer search engine optimisation for your website, so remember, a blog isn’t just for blogging, its for your website.

No Domain, No Gain

Monday, March 15th, 2010

When your choosing a domain for your website you must bare in mind that it has a huge impact your search engine optimisation. Including your company name compared to including keywords takes a lot more effort to optimise, but this also brings the question “How do I include a keyword?”

To include a keyword you must remember, the site address must make sense else people will ignore your website. People may have the perfect URL that you desire, which means you must bargain with the current owner of the address in hopes of purchasing it. This can prove expensive if the address’s value is high, so sometimes other methods must be followed.

So how can you create the perfect domain to help optimise your website as much as possible? Cut it short, if words aren’t required then don’t include them, it’ll just fill the users address bar which may confuse them. Including a keyword is essential as it will help users identifiy what your website is about, which is why Search Engines give better domains the thumbs up than random ones. This keyword is your key into optimising your website, you must use it through the lifetime of your website, so pick wisely else you will regret spending money for nothing. The last thing to bare in mind, if its easy to remember, then chances are users will revisit time to time. If the website is full of numbers and special characters then noone will be able to get the website’s address correct.

XML Sitemaps Could Improve Your Website

Friday, March 12th, 2010

Some advice was offered by Yahoo! recently which could help you improve your SEO campaign.

A post on Yahoo!’s Search Marketing Blog explained how creating a sitemap XML file could become an important part in search engine optimisation, now that most major search engines now support them.

An XML file is described as a document which contains a list of website URLs with information relating to each link, which is then placed on the websites server to be cached by search engines.

“This allows you to tell search engines about your URLs, even if they haven’t crawled them naturally by following links on the web,” Yahoo! explained.

Hopefully this is just one secret that Yahoo! has to reveal about new SEO techniques which could help companies optimise their websites better than ever.
