Google PageRank Is No Secret

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

Recently the European Commission enquired into Google’s search market dominance, noting there there’s no secret approach the Google uses when ranking websites.

A Google engineer (Matt Cuts, Principal Engineer, Search Quality Team) has now hit back in the companies Europen Public Policy Blog by explaining just how Google does things when it comes to Google PageRank in SEO.

“One of the most widely-discussed parts of Google’s scoring has always been PageRank. That ’secret ingredient’ is hardly a secret,” he explains.

Google has always tried to help people understand how Google’s search ranking works. Being involved in multiple live webmaster chats online with hundreds of indiviual participants at once, experminting with tweeting, participating in podcasts, and giving advice to publishers.

“Criticising Google for its ’secret formula’ is an easy claim to make, but it just isn’t true. Google has worked day after day for years to be open, to educate publishers about how we rank sites, and to answer questions from both publishers and our users. So if that’s how people choose to define ’secret’, then ours must be the worst kept sercret in the world of search,” continues Mr Cutts.

Search Engine Optimisation Strategies

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

Many website owners feel that you need to have excessive external links registered on Google in order to be appearing on page one in the organic search results. The risk is paying for bulk external links from link building companies. When you have too many links uploaded at once it looks unnatural to the search engine spiders and may have an adverse effect on your website rankings. For Google we believe that website development is looked at in higher regard. Using unique content build more pages on your site that relate to the services you offer with the intention to use these pages in the future. It is important to be aware that Google monitor backward links and that backward links are internal links and external links. A few years back the main focus for successful SEO was to have many external backlinks and your site would gain top positions on Google. This is no longer the case. Due to all the link farms and spamming techniques implemented externally, Google have focused on website development. You must help the search engine spiders understand what products or services you offer. Below are a few hints on how to go about getting the foundation strong for your site so it stands a chance competing on pg1 organic search results.

First you must identify the phrases that people are typing into search engines looking for your services. There are tools provided by a trusted source to help you identify the best phrases relating to your business. Go to Google and ask them yourself by following this link https://adwords.google.co.uk/select/KeywordToolExternal – using this link you can check what the competition is targeting by typing in their website address into the prompted section or alternatively you can get the variations prompted on the top generic phrases you want to target.

Once you have selected the key phrases you want to target the next step is to ensure that these phrases appear on your site pages so the search engine spiders know what you are providing from your site. Ensure that the copy you use is unique and not copied from any other site. Ensure that you are not repetitive between your website pages within the coding like title strings and meta data. When you do not repeat yourself between your web pages it is easier for a search spider to identify which page should come up in the search results for a specific product or service.

The next step is to link with the key phrases you have selected between your web pages with keyword anchor text links. What happens is the spiders read the name of the link and follow the link, they will then arrive on the page you have linked to and see the key phrase within the content and coding of the web page giving the searcher what they are looking for and giving you the edge for trying to spell it out in baby steps what you are targeting on your website. Search engines are competing to provide the searcher with the results they are searching for so make it easy for them.

Bing Flashes the Bling

Monday, March 8th, 2010

After one unsuccessful attempt at challenging big names like Google you would think Microsoft would throw in the towel, this however is not the case.

Microsoft are planning on spending millions of pounds on promoting its search engine (Bling) with a number of TV adverts through next week to advertise Bing in the UK . This is to help them compete against “Goliath”, aka Google, who are reported to have a massive market share of 90%, whilst Bing a measly 3%.

Microsoft recognise the challenge they are creating for themselves,  President of Consumer and Online at Microsoft UK Ashley Highfield said “This is a big moment — we are taking out our slingshots and taking on Goliath,” but this doesn’t mean it is impossible. Success in the U.S proves there’s a chance it could work, but this can only work if the advertisement campaign works its magic on the public.

Google extends personalized search to signed out users

Saturday, December 5th, 2009

Google is now helping people get more relevant search results by extending it’s personalized search to signed out users.

This feature was previously only available when signed into your Google account.

Personalized search works in such a way that when you use similar search terms regularly, and often click on results from the same website, that website will then appear higher in your personalized results.

The results are for the browser (be it Internet Explorer, Mozilla etc) and the computer that is being used.

This means if you use a different browser or a different computer you will get a different personalized search result.

For example we here at Weblinx often use Google to check our positions for search terms relating to website optimization.

By clicking on our website after conducting these searches our website will start to show higher in the personalized search.
