Is the Meta Keywords Tag Vital for SEO?

Friday, June 4th, 2010

Are you one of those people who fill their meta keywords up on every page in hopes that search engines will optimise each page for them keywords? If so then you may be be interested to know that Google doesn’t look at these keywords at all.  Web Master Matt Cutts of Google explains in the embedded video that due to people spamming tons of keywords in meta keywords they don’t check meta keywords. Yes other search engines may check these keywords but if you want to optimise your website for your chosen keywords then there is another tag you can concentrate on.

By ensuring each page has a good meta description tag Google will use the information or part of the information in the snippet which is found on the search engine result pages. By ensuring you insert 1-2 keywords in here you will give your page a push in the correct direction when it comes to search engine optimisation.

If you concentrate on optimising for Google individually then spend more time on the meta description tag other than the meta keywords tag.

Broaden Your SEO Keywords

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

When it comes to keywords in your search engine optimisation campaign, you can spend all your time trying to get it right for you and then not getting the results. It’s important that you know different variations you can use with your keywords to get better results.

You can reorder your words, add or remove words, strip words of extensions and use different forms of language such as misspellings, slang and acronyms. Each can be just as affective if used correctly, but how can each of these be used?

Reordering words: Most Internet users perform searches with more than one word, typically because it will narrow the search results to increase the likeliness of finding the correct website. If this doesn’t work then the easiest thing to do is to re-order the words and try again. This can be capitalized on by adding keywords in different orders.

Adding words: Because very few searches are through single keywords, adding specifics such as months, colours or locations can help a lot. This is one of the best ways to optimise your keywords as it will help gain the rankings before trying harder keywords.

Removing words: Because there is an amount of keywords to use before being penalised by search engines for spamming, eliminating less frequently searched keywords can help try new keywords, increasing your chance of getting better results.

Stripping back words: Internet users know that websites will use different extensions with their keywords, such as ’searching’ to ’search’ etc. By including shortened down keywords you’ve a better chance of getting higher traffic levels through missing keywords.

Misspelling, slang and acronyms: Any variation of your keywords is worth looking into, not everyone can spell every word correctly, or know the correct words to use, or are able to differentiate international variations, so by including other versions of your keywords can help target this audience.

Remember, the broader you are with your keywords the better chance you have in getting the results you deserve, so put some time aside to look into it and you may be surprised at just what you’ve been missing out on.

meta tag seo

Friday, August 28th, 2009

Meta tags are a starting point to getting your web page optimised. There are two types of meta tags, meta keyword placement and meta descriptions.

Meta keyword placements – when implementing keywords you want to target into the meta tags be specific as possible as to what product or service is offered from that particular web page as it will avoid repetition page to page as each meta keyword placement must not repeat itself throughout your site. Try to avoid repeating keywords in the meta tag keyword placement areas as this may have an adverse affect on your seo rankings.

Meta descriptions – be informative within the descriptions as to what service or product you are offering incorporating your top phrases within the description so still reads grammaticlaly correct. Do not make the descriptions too short as the search spiders prefer the descriptions to be descriptive and this is a good way to get more keywords within the meta description. Avoid repetition throughout your website as this will have an adverse affect on the search engine optimisation campaign
