Google Caffeine Encourages SEO Content

Wednesday, June 9th, 2010

It has been confirmed by Google that they have now updated their search index with their system named “Google Caffeine”. For a while it has been speculated whether it would be released worldwide and what it would bring to the search engine optimisation (SEO) industry, but now details have been announced by Google it is much easier to understand what can be done in terms of SEO.

“Our old index had several layers, some of which were refreshed at a faster rate than others; the main layer would update every couple of weeks. To refresh a layer of the old index, we would analyze the entire web, which meant there was a significant delay between when we found a page and made it available to you.

With Caffeine, we analyze the web in small portions and update our search index on a continuous basis, globally. As we find new pages, or new information on existing pages, we can add these straight to the index. That means you can find fresher information than ever before—no matter when or where it was published.”

This means only one thing, fresh content is a must! By using services such as blogs you are able to keep your website updated with new content as frequently as you desire. The more relevant the content is to your chosen keywords the better your chance of ranking highly in Google’s new search engines results pages.

It is recommended that you now think about hiring an experienced copywriter as they will be able to create fresh and relevant content for your websites helping optimise your website more than ever. It has always been known that fresh content is required to help SEO chances, but now Google are able to find new pages quicker it has never been more important to make sure new content is created as often as possible.

Which Search Engine Should You Aim For With SEO?

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

Have you spoken to a search engine optimisation (SEO) company and heard any search engines mentioned? Most likely you will have heard Google mentioned a few times. This is no surprise due to it’s superiority and popularity over the Internet. But have you ever thought about the other search engines that exist?

Of course Google is one of your main priorities when it comes to SEO, mainly because almost everyone who uses the Internet uses Google for search queries. But the percentage of people who don’t use Google may be the clients you have been looking for. The main three at this time are: Google, Yahoo! and Bing. Each one has a similar algorithm which is why usually when optimising for Google the rest of the results come as a reward.

This is all well and good but it doesn’t mean it will always work. By targeting each search engine individually are have a better chance in ranking highly than you will by aiming for one search engine in particular. It is bad practice to target only one audience when there are plenty of other people who may not find your website due to being small minded about other search engines that exist. For example, Bing is a popular search engine in the USA due to a huge marketing campaign they ran last year. If your website doesn’t list highly in Bing’s search engine results then you’ve lost out on possible clients.

Don’t let your website suffer, do research about different search engines that exist and discover what you or your SEO company can do to ensure your website is search engine friendly to more than one search engine. Bare in mind that there are different types of search engines that exist which can be targetted, such as images, videos, blogs and more.

Duplicated Content Bad for SEO

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

When it comes to search engine optimisation (SEO) you should always ensure your website contains unique content on every page. By duplicating any content on to another page then your page may be penalised by search engines such as Google, Yahoo!, Bing or others.

Sometimes this may not always be your fault, not everyone plays fair on the web and likes to take the easy route of stealing peoples content without permission and using it on their own website. There is an easy way to discover whether someone has duplicated any of your content. First you must copy a snippet of text from the content you want to check and paste it into Googles search field. If your page is listed first then there isn’t much of an issue, but if your page is under ranked by another website then that website has the most authority for your content. You can either ask the web master of the website-in-question to remove the content or you can change the content on your website, the most easiest it to change it yourself.

You are also able to find any pages on your website with the same content on, this is helpful if you want all your pages to contain unique content and is recommended that you add new content in to these pages so you can avoid your site being penalised by search engines.

Using Goals in Google Analytics

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

If your running a search engine optimisation (SEO) campaign on your website then it’s important to track your progress. By being able to see certain statistics such as number of visitors or page views you are able get a better idea of what people think of your website and whether it needs improving at all. The best way to track statistical data from your website is using Google Analytics.

Google Analytics is easy to setup for your website and once you have an account setup and the tracking code has been added to your website you are able to do things such as set goals. Goals are very useful as they can help you make decisions through data collected from your website and by being able to see how people react to different pages on your website you can capitalise instantly before a running trend appears. There are different goals you can set for your website, whether it’s purely for advertisement or an ecommerce site, you can utilise them to your advantage.

  1. If a contact form exists on your website then you can track how many people contact you using the online form. The best way to do this is by creating a thankyou page which will be displayed once the contact form is used. The thankyou page would then be used to count how many people have used the contact form.
  2. If you have documents available for download then by tracking which documents are downloaded the most you are able to see which is most popular. You can then place the download around the website in better areas for your visitors to find.
  3. If you have an ecommerce website then by tracking visitors through the payment process you are able to see how many people opt out and then make changes to avoid this happening next time.

Don’t miss out on an opportunity to help your website improve, create an account on Google Analytics and set up some goals now.

Link Building is Still a Major Part of SEO

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

Search engine optimisation (SEO) is made up of many different sections, meta data, linking, alt tags, title tags and more. The issue that I’ve noticed recently is that some sections are being ignored due to recommendations by other websites. The problem with so many recommendations floating around the Internet is that it is hard to find the truth from the false. Linking has always been a vital part of an SEO campaign, but recently websites have started to spend more time on other things such as creating new content and less time on getting internal and external links.

It is true that Google frowns upon purchased links and spamming, but it doesn’t mean it isn’t possible. By obeying certain methods you will be able to get a high quality linking structure for your website which will help you much more than concentrating on fixing little things such as missing alt tags or adding new meta data on pages. By submitting keyword-optimised articles to a variety of news websites, getting involved in social media marketing, or implementing a Google News feed you are able to legitimately build links which will avoid your website getting penalised by search engines.

When contacting websites to request link swapping you must ensure the websites page ranking is of good quality. By using websites with page rankings of 0,1 or 2 you needn’t bother, it won’t do much for your website. By aiming for highly ranked websites you will have a much better chance of getting a higher page ranking yourself. It doesn’t matter if it’s only 1-2 websites, if they have a high page ranking then they will do your website a huge favour.

It’s easy to get plenty of links to your website once you know how, but it’s also easy to forget where your links exist. It’s essential you monitor all your links to ensure they all go to existing pages on your website, any broken links can affect your SEO campaign which means all the time spent on building links has gone to waste. If any of your links appear to be broken then it’s recommended you either contact the web master to fix the link or create a 301 redirect to another page.

Don’t believe everything you read on the web, not everyone is as clued up as others which will effect your website if you don’t research techniques thoroughly before using them.

The Wonder Wheel, an Assistance to your SEO campaign

Monday, May 10th, 2010

Since Google updated its design it has included some new features which help narrow search results down to the most relevant websites. The better optimised the website the more relevant it will be to Google, thus always appearing highly for search queries when narrowed down. One feature Google has added to its design is called ‘Wonder Wheel’, which can be found when searching for web pages on the newly added sidebar.

The wonder wheel finds relevant keywords to your search query and displays them around the keyword, which is displayed as a spider diagram. This helps searchers find more relevant pages by finding search queries they may not have thought of at first. This will then continue to narrow the search results down until a website with the answer to the search query appears.

The reason why the wonder wheel can help assist your SEO campaign is simple. By finding new search queries you may not have included in your website you are able to find out who the competition is, what they do, and what keywords they are using. These new keywords can then be added to your search engine optimisation campaign, which will give search engines something new to crawl on your website. It is recommended to change your keywords every so often to keep search engines interested in your website, so by using the wonder wheel you are able to discover new keywords you may not have imagined existed before.

New Google, More SEO Success?

Monday, May 10th, 2010

As you should be well aware by now, Google has recently updated its services to look more fresh and up to date than its previous form. The whole design has been upgraded making it much easier to use and a lot more accurate, but what does this mean for SEO? Well actually, quite a lot if you like to stay proactive with your SEO campaign. The best way to compete in SERP’s is by staying proactive, not reactive, else your website will suffer in the long run.

Due to the upgrade to Googles accuracy search queries are able to find much more relevant services than it once could. This is a great reason for user to continue using Google for its services than any other search engine due to its simple layout and accuracy. Narrowing search results down is a lot easier which can give people the best results for what they intend to find, which means websites which aren’t properly optimised will vanish off the search engine results due to their relevancy being low unlike optimised pages.

Now social media has become extremely popular all over the world search engines have started to embed feeds into the SERP’s to keep peoples interests in using search engines daily. Google’s new look will hopefully continue its reign over the Internet and help big and small companies get discovered due to their search engine optimisation.

It is not definite that the new Google design will help SEO campaigns, but speculation is better than nothing as any changes to your SEO can give your website a little boost which may be the boost you need to get high results.

SEO is Affected by Your Websites Speed

Friday, April 9th, 2010

So you’ve filled your website up with large images and notice a slight decrease in your page loading, what of it? Well if your cherish your search engine optimisation for your website then I recommend you read on; Google has confirmed in a blog post that your sites speed is now going to affect your Google ranking.

This is just another step for Google into finding and ranking only the very best sites through both speed and efficiency. This could only be good news for hosting companies due to websites needing higher bandwidth to keep their site running efficiently at all times. This means only one thing, more money for them. But, money shouldn’t be an issue once a website has it’s desired ranking, it’s only a matter of time till that money seems like peanuts.

In Google’s blog post they recommended a few tools to help evaluate websites speed. One of their recommendations was the use of their newly released site performance tool, located in the Webmaster Tools suite, which helps assess performance statistics and make changes accordingly.

This may not be news to some as it was rumoured back in November, but now it has been confirmed you should definitely look into improving your websites performance to get the most out of your SEO campaign. The criterion isn’t weighted as heavily as other factors, but it doesn’t mean this should be ignored, your page ranking depends on it.

Google Alerts Can Help Your Blog

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

Do you post regularly on blogs but find it hard to come up with new ideas for posts? I myself struggle time and time again to come up with a topic to post about which will interest the public. By repeating the same topic over and over you will lose readers, so how can this be avoided and how can you stay ahead of the game? Use Google Alerts.

Google Alerts allows you to receive emails about specific posts from chosen keywords. You can receive these emails as soon as a post is indexed, daily or weekly. By doing this you can keep in the know at all times without losing time searching for different keywords. By knowing what other people are posting about you will be able to post similar content on your blog. This may work because people may miss previous posts and find yours, which means the little effort you put in to the post is just as affective as posts you have spent hours on getting it perfect.

This doesn’t mean you should become lazy and post similar posts as everyone else, but if you ever need to create a few posts quickly this is definitely a life saver.

Google AdWords Optimisation

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

When creating and maintaining your AdWords campaigns you may not get the results you desire for, which could be down to poor optimisation. It doesn’t matter whether this is to help your search engine optimisation campaign or to get a few clicks to your website, the better optimised your AdWords campaign the better for you. Here are a few strategies advised by Google to get better results from your campaigns:

Build effective campaigns

By taking the time to set up your campaigns correctly it can help you get higher quality traffic to your website. Here are a few strategies to try with your campaign:

  • Separate Search and Content Network campaigns: By setting up a separate campaign just for the Content Network will give you more control over your daily budgets, ad groups, keywords and bids.
  • Create many, tightly themed ad groups: AdWords can help target adverts more precisely if you build multiple ad groups, each with a small tightly-themed set of 5-20 keywords. Ensure you use a mixture of both high and low searched keywords.
  • Copy your best performing text ads from Search campaigns: For your initial setup it is best to use the text adverts with the highest click-through rates from your search campaigns as this will give your adverts just as much chance.
  • Set-up the same starting CPC bid as your Search campaigns: Google recommend starting with the same maximum CPC bid as your Search campaign ad groups. Once AdWords has collected enough data, Google will then use smart pricing technology to automatically optimise your bids on the Content Network to give you more profitable clicks.
  • Set up AdWords Conversion Tracking on your website: By installing Conversion Tracking on your website it will help you measure the sales and leads (conversions) you receive from each ad group and placement. This will give you the upper hand as it may show some adverts are performing better than others, bringing you back to the strategy “Copy your best performing text ads from Search campaigns.”

Optimise for better results

It is important that you monitor your campaign’s performance and frequently optimise individual elements, whether it be changing your CPC bids, adverts. Before making any significant changes, such as changing bids, excluding high volume sites, pausing ad groups, you should wait until enough clicks or conversion data has accrued. Google recommend having at least 5 conversions or 100 clicks per site is acceptable before you make any changes.

  • Exclude poor-performing sites: Get more qualified traffic and boost your conversions by excluding websites that are performing poorly in your campaign, based on the number of clicks, the average CPC and the number of conversions of each advert.
  • Focus your keywords and exclude less relevant keywords: Add more keywords that help describe your product and ad group theme better by using more descriptive keywords. By adding negative keywords also, you are able to refine your targeting and prevent impressions on irrelevant sites.
  • Adjust your bids to manage your costs: Changing your bids for ad groups or individual sites based on the conversion rate, average CPC and cost-per-acquisition (CPA) will help you meet your performance goals. You should only bid higher for better performing websites to get more traffic, and less for poorly performing websites. This will avoid spending more money in irrelevant areas and more on the popular areas.
  • Use Conversion Optimiser to manage your CPA: Google Conversion Optimiser is a great tool that manages bids at the site level automatically to reach a maximum CPA bid, which is the amount you are willing to pay for a conversion.

Expand your campaign for more traffic

Google recommend creating a keyword expansion strategy for the Content Network will help get additional traffic and boost sales from your campaign.

  • Use the Wonder Wheel tool for ad group ideas: Wonder Wheel, found on Google Search, will help you create new ad group themes and keyword ideas. When searching any topic on Google.com, Wonder Wheel will create up to eight related topics for you to consider creating.
  • Create new ad groups to reach additional parts of the network: Each topic in Wonder Wheel represents a possible ad group theme for your campaign. By clicking on any of the topics you will see other searches and t themes related to it. Any closely related topics that are less relevant to the product you are advertising can be used for your negative keyword list, as mentioned previously.
  • Expand your keyword list to get more traffic: Once you’ve finalised your ad group themes, use the AdWords Keyword Tool to get new keyword ideas. Enter ad group theme descriptions or keywords under the ‘Descriptive words or phrases’ tab. From there you can select 5-10 most frequently searched keywords and use them with your ad group. This will help you keep your ad group ahead of the game by keeping your relevancy high at all times.

Remember, these strategies have been offered by Google, by no means do you need to follow these strategies, but bare in mind these are the owners, if they recommend these strategies then they must work to some extent.
