Search Engine Optimisation, Should You Trust It?

Friday, April 30th, 2010

Search engine optimisation (SEO) is the process of ensuring the website is search engine friendly to improve the volume or quality of traffic to the website. This is known as a natural approach to getting search results unlike search engine marketing which can cost a little to a lot. The idea behind SEO is that the higher the website appears on search engine result pages (SERP’s) the more visitors the website will get. SEO doesn’t have to be with just the website itself, it can also lead to optimising images and videos by the website.

So now you know what search engine optimisation is, why should you trust it? Most SEO companies can not promise results as this would be a blatant lie. The reason why this is definitely a lie is because it isn’t certain where your website will be ranked due to search engines such as Google, Yahoo! and Bing keeping the methods they use to rank websites secret. This doesn’t mean everything that is done to optimise websites is created out of speculation, most methods are recommended by search engines to give websites a better chance. The reason why search engines offer help is to allow the bots they use to crawl websites to work through websites much quicker and to give web masters a better idea of what they should do with websites to have just as much chance as everyone else.

So now you understand why SEO companies can’t promise results, but that still doesn’t explain why you should trust it. There is no reason why you should trust it, but there is also no reason why you shouldn’t trust it either. It is proven that SEO works by searching for any keyword you can come up with to an extent, nearly every single word will give you page results but the longer the search phrase the more specific your results will be which may result in 0 pages depending on what you search. SEO can be learnt by anyone as long as they are given the adequate training, which means you don’t always have to go to an SEO company, but with that being said it is recommended you search for a highly rated and trusted company to give you more time to work on your business and less on your website. Search engine optimisation isn’t a one time thing, it is a continuous technique until the end of the your website. Everyone is competing for the top page results so they can get the traffic they desire, and by giving up once you have the top results will only lead to a waste of time.

By now you should understand what search engine optimisation is, why companies can’t promise results and why you should trust it. But the simple answer to ‘Search engine optimisation, should you trust it?’ is down to you/your company. Not everyone believes SEO works and it is down to chance, whether the proof is in the pudding or not is not always the case. It is recommended to converse with multiple SEO companies and look out for tell tall signs of fakes, such as making promises, making things overly complicated or over charging you without explanation.

Your Industry Determines Your Social Media & Networking as Well as SEO

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

By now you should have heard of at least one social media or social networking service available online, whether it be Facebook, Twitter, Digg, Tumblr, there are plenty of different services available. The trouble with so many services existing is knowing which ones are best suited for your website, because each website has its own targetted audience, whether it be sociality, news, graphics, videos or music there are different websites available to collect resources from, submitted by people just like ourselves.

One question you may be asking is ‘Why should I bother getting involved with social media & networking websites when my website has SEO?’ Well that may be so, but by broadcasting material involved with your website you are able to find and target audiences who may have never searched for your website before.

So how can you find social media & networking websites and use them to help promote your website to people who care? Lets face it, if people don’t care for what you are posting then they will ignore it and let it get buried under hundreds of ‘useful’ posts, resulting in a waste of time from your behalf. It may not always be due to being irrelevant, it may also depend on the quality of the post, if it’s been done before then it’s probably been seen before, which makes you look silly and waste yet more time.

To define whether the website is correct for you it is recommended that you do your research about the website first. By reading recent posts you will be able to get an idea of what the website is about and what people are posting. If the posts are relevant to your industry, register to the website and remember it, this is one of many websites you will be participating in on a regular basis. The better ranked the website the better exposure your website will get, if the website is hardly used then you will only waste time you could be using on a more popular website used by bigger and better companies. To find big websites should not be a difficult task, by searching for phrases relevant to your website and finding highly ranked websites in SERP’s you will be able to find the best websites for you.

When posting on these website you must remember not to post spam. By spamming you will only get yourself banned which means all the effort you’ve put into building up a reputation will go to waste, which can help when you are trying to communicate with other members. Your reputation will mean a lot after a long period of time as members will recognise who you are and the quality of your submissions. By posting up fresh content you will be able to collect views from others and exposure, giving you the chance to converse with other members and share opinions. Opinions may be towards the content, both positive and negative should be taken into account as this can be used for your next post, so don’t lash out on unsuspecting victims because they don’t like what you’ve posted, this opinion could give you the help you need to make a better post next time.

Your posts don’t always need to be relevant to your website, the better your posts the more you are respected by fellow members. This can allow you to share links to members who trust you, which then gives your website the traffic you’ve worked hard for through months of submissions and conversations.

Social media & Networking may not be alike, but they both assist your website just as much when done correctly. Don’t allow your website to fall behind others, give it the extra boost it needs by becoming a friendly member of a website society and you may create contacts as well as clients on the way.

SEO Can Go To Waste

Monday, April 26th, 2010

Search engine optimisation determines whether your website will compete against other websites or not. Without SEO your website will be lost to the world and that means no matter how much effort you put into the design of your website it will go to waste whether you like it or not. The only problem with this is that some websites only concentrate on the SEO campaign and not on the websites design, which can affect the traffic level resulting in a waste of money. So how can you find the fine line to ensure your website reaches the level it should be to attract and keep visitors?

A website can rank highly for the best terms in it’s industry but that doesn’t matter if the website isn’t easy to use. I’ve come across websites in the past which have ranked number highly for my search queries but have been impossible to read, thus me moving on to the next website and so on. If this happens you will create a high bounce rate for your website which is not good. You must ensure it works correctly else you will lose a lot of traffic which you’ve worked so hard to attract.

Key areas to concentrate on in terms of design are navigation, accessibility and loading times. If your website can’t supply any of these three then it may as well seize to exist as it can become a nuisance using a website which is poorly designed. Ensure the linking structure on your website is easy to find and move around – if the navigation is like driving without a road then people will give up and move on to another website. Not everyone has the same benefits that we have, such as vision and hearing. By ensuring people with accessibility problems can still use the website will give your website a much better chance in attracting this audience. If your website loads slowly then people will give up and leave, it’s as simple as that. The quicker your website loads the better chance people will stay and a higher chance of ranking highly in Google SERP due to its recent announcement of determining page rankings by assessing page loading speeds.

If you have any other tips that can help people optimise the design of their website then leave a comment.

On and Off-Page SEO

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

There are different SEO techniques knocking around the Internet and I have compiled a few different techniques you can use with your website to strengthen your search engine optimisation campaign.

On-page optimisation is usually techniques such as optimising meta data, using Internal links, etc. and off-page optimisation is helping optimise the website with other services such as social media sites and blogs.

On-page

The page title is the most important on-page aspect when it comes to search engine optimisation. Every page on your website should contain a different title including the main keywords for that page. The description should be unique from the text on the page but should also be relevant to page. Search engines may use the description meta tag when displaying results on the SERP.

Ensure you use H1-H3 tags with your keywords. The better your keywords the higher the priority, H1 beings the highest and H3 beings the lowest. When search engines crawl websites they differentiate content from one another by locating these tags, so use them wisely.

If your using images with your website then make sure you include alt text with every picture. These not only help search engines understand what the images are but is also helpful for people who can not see or display images.

Off-page

Articles can help optimise your website by giving you one-way links to your website with different qualities depending on the website used to distribute the article. The better the article the better the likelihood more people will read it, bringing traffic to your website in the process.

Social bookmarking can become your best friend when done correctly. By bookmarking websites you are able to bring them to people’s attention by being tagged with relevant keywords. The better they bookmarks are ranked the higher they are optimised with the websites. If they are displayed on the homepage then this can give your website a huge load of traffic from little effort.

Create a blog for your website with different services such as Wordpress or Blogger. By keeping the blog up to date with fresh content you are able to not only keep people up to date with your company but also engage in conversation with readers through comments. The better the content on your blog the more chance people will come back for more which means including links in every blog posts will give your website more traffic in the process.

Content Development Helps Assist SEO

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

The quality of your content is vital for your search engine optimisation campaign, the better the quality the better your website will rank on SERP’s. An Internet marketing expert has looked at some key factors to consider when assessing the quality of your content to ensure it is done correctly.

Eric Enge from Search Engine Watch explained that on-page search engine optimisation can be useful when helping your website climb up SERP’s such as Google, Yahoo!, Bing, etc. but it should avoid the use of artificially levering in keywords.

By trying to include keywords as much as possible can makes articles impossible to read, which unfortunately is the same case for search engines as they are becoming increasingly adapt at finding content that is unnatural. This doesn’t mean you can’t include keywords in your content, but the limit of keywords should be revised to ensure content is readable at all times.

Before an Internet marketing campaign is created, all needs of the targeted audience should be met first. This will ensure that the Internet marketing campaign is needed as it can become a waste of money due to missing out simple things such as accessibility features, speed of page, etc.

For more information on how you can ensure you have eliminated all techniques to optimise your website read my previous post SEO requires out-of-the-box thinking.

SEO Requires Out-of-the-Box Thinking

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

Search engine optimisation (SEO) is one of the cheapest forms of online marketing, it is used by nearly every website which means there is always competition no matter what the industry. So how can you help your website add that extra oomph and beat the rest?

By repeating the same SEO techniques on your website like every other website you will be seen no different from any other site using the same keywords as yours. It doesn’t matter whether your content is different from every other site, if you are following the common trend then you are just as plain as a packet of original crisps. So back to the question asked earlier, how can you help your website add some flavour to it and rise above them all?

Answer – Think outside the box

Don’t just follow the same old “Add a meta tag here”  and “Add an anchored link there”, think about your visitors. Not everyone has the same perfect 20/20 vision that you have (or may not have) so by helping ensure accessibility features are in place can help collect more traffic through supporting not-so-fortunate people. The speed of your site also matters now, as mentioned in one of my past posts (SEO is affected by your websites speed). Ease of use is also another priority which should be taken into account. If it is hard to move around the website or use different features then people will leave just as quickly as they enter.

A major example of thinking outside of the box is by including features such as flash, videos, sounds, etc. The more entertaining your website the more likely you will interest visitors accessing your website, so try to incorporate features not found everyday.

Ensure your Press Releases are SEO Friendly

Monday, April 19th, 2010

Optimising your press releases is as easy as ABC but that doesn’t mean everyone know how to do it. By making sure your press releases are search engine optimisation friendly you will build link justice without spending money on incoming links.

Press releases allow companies to deliver news and event news to the Internet which can be found through search engines quickly. The press release should be written in such a way that it should rank highly in the search engines for your chosen keywords and help your website collect important backlinks which will help boost the websites position in the search engine rankings.

A list of keywords should be prepared before a press release is composed. Long tail keywords usually have less competition but also generate more total searches than short tailed keywords.

Your title is the key to attracting readers, the better it is the more likely you are to get more traffic to your website. The title gets massive exposure so by including a keyword in will help you optimise your press release better.

The summary of your press release should be within 250 characters and include secondary keywords to optimise weaker keywords for your press release. Combined with your titles keyword will help strengthen the article much better.

The body of the press release should exceed a minimum of 300 words, including 3-4 keywords including the keyword used in your title and summary. The body of the article is crawled by search engines and used as a description in SERP, so by ensuring proper keywords are included you will eliminate any gaps missed by missing possible opportunities. Link your important keywords to relevant pages in your site, avoiding the front page. Formatting the keywords further will help them stand out to readers.

The topic of your press release does not need to be stunning to be exciting. News happens everywhere despite the topic, so by choosing the correct topic for your press release you will target the relevant audience for your website.

The press release should be written in a users point of view, using the language that is typically discovered when searching within the chosen topic. Include the company logo for branding and insert photos, graphics, video links and any other media to help readers find out more information through other forms of media other than text.

Distribute your press release in the correct place. It’s no good dumping your release in as many submission sites as possible, by sending it to the correct places it will help your article to be found by the correct audience. By ensuring the readers make use of the information you provide they will certain to come back for more.

So remember, by ensuring your article is SEO friendly you will collect a fresh stream of traffic to your website.

Mobile Involved in SEO

Friday, April 16th, 2010

It’s that time again when I create another post about another SEO technique that you can use in your SEO campaign. Look at how technology and the Internet has evolved, moving the Internet from computers to mobiles, so should it come as a surprise that Google take into account how websites render on a mobile phone? If you answered no then you would be correct.

According to an expert if a business hopes to get their website high up in Google’s mobile search results then they must ensure that their pages render well on handheld devices. This is done by looking closely at how well a website loads up on different mobile phones, along with the bounce rate for visitors, to assess where to rank it.

By creating a secondary mobile style sheet for the full website you will eliminate the worry of being penalised for not supporting mobile phones. Also, by submitting a mobile sitemap and cleaning up the websites code will make it much easier for search engines to crawl the website.

“Sloppy HTML or bad JavaScript can really cause problems on some mobile browsers and can also impact download and rendering time of pages,” Ms Krum, Rank-Mobile founder, warns.

So if you want to give your SEO campaign more stability then ensure you support mobile phones else you may miss out on the position you envy for.
