Internet Marketing Lesson: Wax On, Wax Off

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

Due to the recent trend in “Karate Kid” I saw it only fit I try to create a post which relates to the film. Luckily enough for me not only was I able to create a post relevant to the movie but also to search engine optimisation (SEO) too. If you’re wondering how the quote “Wax on, wax off” can relate to SEO then allow me to explain – you may learn a thing or two, grasshopper.

When making your website search engine friendly you must bare in mind that once you’ve applied the foundations they aren’t permanent forever. You should always be looking to tweak the SEO to meet new standards which may appear as time passes by. Content such as keywords, descriptions and pages may begin to gather dust as the website ages which is when it is ideal to perform the wax on, wax off technique.

So what is the wax on, wax off technique? On the film “Karate Kid” Daniel is asked by Mr. Miyagi to wax his car with a motion he is demonstrated. To wax a car you must apply the wax, remove the wax correctly and then apply the wax once again, etc. This same process can be used with the SEO on your website. By removing the content which has existed since the start of the website and replacing it with new material you are able to give your a website a fresh appearance to search engines. Be sure you don’t remove all your SEO as this can affect your current positions, especially if you are ranked high on search engines already.

This technique is only ideal if your site is not ranking high enough for your chosen keywords. If you are on page 1 it is not recommended you attempt this and concentrate on gaining new links to your website instead or adding more pages with new content on your site.

Which Blog Service for SEO?

Friday, June 4th, 2010

Are you setting up a blog for your website but don’t know where to start? If this is the case then you’ve come to the correct place. Having experience in creating blogs I have come across 2 different services which are worthy of your time. But before I explain which services you can use and why, I would first like to explain why you should create a blog in the first place in case your not completely convinced it’s right for you.

Blogging has been around for years and was once known as Internet journalism but as time has progressed so has blogging itself, such as who owns blogs and who posts on blogs. Blogs allows you, the author, to post content relevant to your blogs chosen industry and gives you a voice amongst many others. This means you are able to offer your own knowledge to readers and in return receive a nice flow of traffic to your blog. The better and more relevant the content in your posts the better your chances at getting a high traffic rate to your blog.

So back to the services. Both services are free, one being for novices with the least amount of Internet skills and the other being for more experienced computer users. These services are called Wordpress and Blogger. Each offers different features to users of the services, blogger being a much simpler blogging platform and Wordpress being a much more complex and diverse blogging platform. The biggest difference between the two is why you should own both, blogger is an off site blog which is hosted by Google whilst Wordpress is hosted on your own server. This means you are giving your website a huge support towards it’s search engine optimisation attempt.

Blogger is a simple service which requires a registered account through Google. The blog doesn’t take long to set up and once created is easy to post on. The purpose behind owning a blog through blogger is due to it’s capability of containing links. By pointing links towards your website you are able to give your website a decent linking structure as long as you regularly update your blog with new content.

Wordpress is a better service for both posting and customisation. As Wordpress is capable of being modified it gives admins the chance to give readers a better experience by using themes and plugins. As a huge number of both themes and plugins exist any industry your blog aims for can match which means you will always have just as much chance as any other blog to be successful. Not only is it good for customisation but because Wordpress can be used to submit posts to Googles news results your posts have a better chance at being discovered by readers.

Don’t choose just one and work on that only, by owning two different blogs you are able to give your website more exposure by submitting fresh content regularly. The more frequent posts are created and published the more search engines will visit both the blog and the website (through added links on the blogs).

Are Blog Posts all That in Terms of SEO?

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

Here’s a question for you, do you think blog posts are a good way to strengthen your search engine optimisation (SEO) campaign for your website? If you don’t believe they are then you’d be sadly mistaken. After months of posting on our blog we have notice a huge increase of traffic to both our blog and website. Some days have been better than others in terms of how many visits we have had, but by looking at our graph you can see where we began posting frequently (something you yourself should be doing on your blog):

SEO Blog

As you can see, some weeks have been better than others when it comes to visitors. This is because of the material being posted by myself and other authors may not have been as good as other posts. The better the content the better the traffic, this means by posting relevant posts with appropriate titles and meta content will have a better chance of attracting readers than posts which have nothing of interest to web users.

So yes, blog posts are “all that” when it comes to SEO. The proof is in the pudding as some might say. The question is, what use is having people visit the blog when they should be visiting the website? By inserting links strategically you are able to give pages that may not be accessed as much a chance at being discovered by visitors. By posting frequently you will build trust with visitors, the better you are trusted the more likely you are to convert visitors from the blog to the website.

You may not be able to post frequently but by utilising a blog and posting as much as possible you have just as much chance at getting your website a higher traffic level than you once would. Don’t avoid this chance at gaining a higher popularity, we’ve discovered the benefits of blog posting and now it’s your turn to reap the rewards.

Broken Links Damage SEO Chances

Friday, May 14th, 2010

A linking structure has always been a high priority when it comes to search engine optimisation due to it’s huge affect on rankings. The idea behind linking is the better the ranking for the page linking to your website the better it is for your website. But this can also become a huge blow to your site if the links coming in to your website lead to pages that no longer exist.

This is according to Chris Thomas of Reseo.com, who has explained in a post for ‘Smart Company’ that firms risk damaging their rankings by failing to resolve this issue quickly. The problem with trying to rectify this issue quickly may not always be down to the company, but down to the web master of the linking website. This is because some web masters may take a while to fix the link and direct it to an existing page, or may even remove the link altogether.

Mr Thomas recommends the use of 301 redirects instead of contacting the web master. By simply redirecting search engine robots and web users to another page it will help deteriorate the issue with links more or less. It has been reported in the past that 301 redirects can affect websites SEO campaigns too, so these should be a last resort if the web master doesn’t act quickly enough for your liking.

Be careful when linking with other websites, ensure that you check your links frequently in case a link does direct to an non-existent page so the issue can be resolved quickly and efficiently before search engines penalise your website.

Content Development Helps Assist SEO

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

The quality of your content is vital for your search engine optimisation campaign, the better the quality the better your website will rank on SERP’s. An Internet marketing expert has looked at some key factors to consider when assessing the quality of your content to ensure it is done correctly.

Eric Enge from Search Engine Watch explained that on-page search engine optimisation can be useful when helping your website climb up SERP’s such as Google, Yahoo!, Bing, etc. but it should avoid the use of artificially levering in keywords.

By trying to include keywords as much as possible can makes articles impossible to read, which unfortunately is the same case for search engines as they are becoming increasingly adapt at finding content that is unnatural. This doesn’t mean you can’t include keywords in your content, but the limit of keywords should be revised to ensure content is readable at all times.

Before an Internet marketing campaign is created, all needs of the targeted audience should be met first. This will ensure that the Internet marketing campaign is needed as it can become a waste of money due to missing out simple things such as accessibility features, speed of page, etc.

For more information on how you can ensure you have eliminated all techniques to optimise your website read my previous post SEO requires out-of-the-box thinking.

Social Networking Isn’t a Waste of Time

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

Everyday I mention to people that I use social networking within work everyday, which instantly creates the impression that I spend hours sitting around on Facebook, Twitter, etc. It’s no surprise people assume this, not everyone understands that social networking is used by companies everyday to help promote products. This is why I am creating this post today, to explain to you why social networking isn’t a waste of time and can in fact give your product the boost it needs to be up there with the best of your industry.

So what is social networking? It was just the other day I was debating with a workmate whether social media and social networking are the same; it’s a difficult one. The media are forever portraying both social media and social networking in the same category, but I myself think there’s a difference which separates the two.

  1. Social media allows Internet users to view, post, comment, rate and forward items such as text, images, videos and music, which is then discovered by others through websites like Digg, YouTube, SoundCloud, etc. there are many websites that support all types of media.
  2. Social networking allows people to keep up to date with other contacts at a daily basis through websites such as Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, etc. This allows them to send pm’s to each other, update their status’s, post media and more.

So some of you may still be sat there scratching your head wondering what the difference is still, let me explain. They both do sound similar, but the point of introducing social networking to your company is to allow you to communicate with other members of the public. By being able to communicate freely with as many people as possible you are able to spread your product much faster than you would through adverts, and most of all it is free.

So why isn’t social networking a waste of time then? Surely its just someone sat around posting relevant information about the industry every day? That may be the case, but it takes time and effort to get a social networking campaign to work in your favour. Not only is it free but it is also able to be embedded in your Internet marketing (if your company has Internet marketing of course.) You must get the public’s trust before anyone will be convinced to trust anything you say, this will take a long time through posting messages to individuals, interacting with groups of people, because there’s no way anyone will look into your product if they think your just another fool wasting peoples time, unless of course they are gullible enough.

So if you ever tell anyone your looking into social networking, expect people to give you the odd look, they may not understand that even the biggest of companies are now doing it, it’s just another day in the office.

Broaden Your SEO Keywords

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

When it comes to keywords in your search engine optimisation campaign, you can spend all your time trying to get it right for you and then not getting the results. It’s important that you know different variations you can use with your keywords to get better results.

You can reorder your words, add or remove words, strip words of extensions and use different forms of language such as misspellings, slang and acronyms. Each can be just as affective if used correctly, but how can each of these be used?

Reordering words: Most Internet users perform searches with more than one word, typically because it will narrow the search results to increase the likeliness of finding the correct website. If this doesn’t work then the easiest thing to do is to re-order the words and try again. This can be capitalized on by adding keywords in different orders.

Adding words: Because very few searches are through single keywords, adding specifics such as months, colours or locations can help a lot. This is one of the best ways to optimise your keywords as it will help gain the rankings before trying harder keywords.

Removing words: Because there is an amount of keywords to use before being penalised by search engines for spamming, eliminating less frequently searched keywords can help try new keywords, increasing your chance of getting better results.

Stripping back words: Internet users know that websites will use different extensions with their keywords, such as ’searching’ to ’search’ etc. By including shortened down keywords you’ve a better chance of getting higher traffic levels through missing keywords.

Misspelling, slang and acronyms: Any variation of your keywords is worth looking into, not everyone can spell every word correctly, or know the correct words to use, or are able to differentiate international variations, so by including other versions of your keywords can help target this audience.

Remember, the broader you are with your keywords the better chance you have in getting the results you deserve, so put some time aside to look into it and you may be surprised at just what you’ve been missing out on.

XML Sitemaps Could Improve Your Website

Friday, March 12th, 2010

Some advice was offered by Yahoo! recently which could help you improve your SEO campaign.

A post on Yahoo!’s Search Marketing Blog explained how creating a sitemap XML file could become an important part in search engine optimisation, now that most major search engines now support them.

An XML file is described as a document which contains a list of website URLs with information relating to each link, which is then placed on the websites server to be cached by search engines.

“This allows you to tell search engines about your URLs, even if they haven’t crawled them naturally by following links on the web,” Yahoo! explained.

Hopefully this is just one secret that Yahoo! has to reveal about new SEO techniques which could help companies optimise their websites better than ever.
