Is the Meta Keywords Tag Vital for SEO?

Friday, June 4th, 2010

Are you one of those people who fill their meta keywords up on every page in hopes that search engines will optimise each page for them keywords? If so then you may be be interested to know that Google doesn’t look at these keywords at all.  Web Master Matt Cutts of Google explains in the embedded video that due to people spamming tons of keywords in meta keywords they don’t check meta keywords. Yes other search engines may check these keywords but if you want to optimise your website for your chosen keywords then there is another tag you can concentrate on.

By ensuring each page has a good meta description tag Google will use the information or part of the information in the snippet which is found on the search engine result pages. By ensuring you insert 1-2 keywords in here you will give your page a push in the correct direction when it comes to search engine optimisation.

If you concentrate on optimising for Google individually then spend more time on the meta description tag other than the meta keywords tag.

SEO For Your Twitter

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

Do you own a Twitter account or thought about creating one? Then you may be interested to know that there are certain search engine optimisation (SEO) techniques you can use to optimise your account. Don’t avoid using a Twitter account, there are many advantages you can gain from one for your business such as being able to find new people, converse with people and advertise links to your website.

Whenever dealing with social network accounts you should always treat them as you would with a website. By optimising them correctly you have just as much chance to rank highly in search engine results as websites would.

A few SEO tips to consider with your Twitter account are as follows:

  • Ensure you have your URL visible in your profile, it doesn’t take long to type in and will help other users find your website.
  • Choose an appropriate use name for your Twitter account. By choosing an irrelevant name you will lose any chance of ranking in search results for your chosen keywords.
  • Make sure that you optimise your description by including your chosen keywords. Your description is used as the meta tag information for your profile so by including your keywords you are more likely to be found.
  • Your background can be used to display more information. You’re allowed to upload any background image you like so by including information about your services or company in the image you will be able to get more information across to visitors.
  • Converse with your followers by asking and answering questions. By showing a human controls the profile people build more trust towards your Twitter profile.
  • Not many people know that by using hash tags you will help your profile be found by other users. By placing a “#” next to keywords such as SEO your tweet will appear in search results for that keyword when searched.

Using Goals in Google Analytics

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

If your running a search engine optimisation (SEO) campaign on your website then it’s important to track your progress. By being able to see certain statistics such as number of visitors or page views you are able get a better idea of what people think of your website and whether it needs improving at all. The best way to track statistical data from your website is using Google Analytics.

Google Analytics is easy to setup for your website and once you have an account setup and the tracking code has been added to your website you are able to do things such as set goals. Goals are very useful as they can help you make decisions through data collected from your website and by being able to see how people react to different pages on your website you can capitalise instantly before a running trend appears. There are different goals you can set for your website, whether it’s purely for advertisement or an ecommerce site, you can utilise them to your advantage.

  1. If a contact form exists on your website then you can track how many people contact you using the online form. The best way to do this is by creating a thankyou page which will be displayed once the contact form is used. The thankyou page would then be used to count how many people have used the contact form.
  2. If you have documents available for download then by tracking which documents are downloaded the most you are able to see which is most popular. You can then place the download around the website in better areas for your visitors to find.
  3. If you have an ecommerce website then by tracking visitors through the payment process you are able to see how many people opt out and then make changes to avoid this happening next time.

Don’t miss out on an opportunity to help your website improve, create an account on Google Analytics and set up some goals now.

Your SEO Campaign and Sitemaps

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

If your wondering what there is that can help with your search engine optimisation campaign I suggest sitemaps. Sitemaps are just one of the techniques that can be used when optimising your website. Sitemaps have existed for years but do you know why they exist?

Sitemaps help your website highlight any important information contained within your domain and allow serp’s to find the information and cache it. This can help websites with pages containing a large amount of images on.

Google explains “This is particularly true for images that are only accessible via JavaScript forms, or for pages that contain many images but only some of which are integral to the page content.”

By using sitemaps with your website’s search engine optimisation campaign it is likely to rank much better than it once did. This is because any material that was once hidden will be found much easier, allowing your website to reach its full potential when it comes to search engines.

Google PageRank Is No Secret

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

Recently the European Commission enquired into Google’s search market dominance, noting there there’s no secret approach the Google uses when ranking websites.

A Google engineer (Matt Cuts, Principal Engineer, Search Quality Team) has now hit back in the companies Europen Public Policy Blog by explaining just how Google does things when it comes to Google PageRank in SEO.

“One of the most widely-discussed parts of Google’s scoring has always been PageRank. That ’secret ingredient’ is hardly a secret,” he explains.

Google has always tried to help people understand how Google’s search ranking works. Being involved in multiple live webmaster chats online with hundreds of indiviual participants at once, experminting with tweeting, participating in podcasts, and giving advice to publishers.

“Criticising Google for its ’secret formula’ is an easy claim to make, but it just isn’t true. Google has worked day after day for years to be open, to educate publishers about how we rank sites, and to answer questions from both publishers and our users. So if that’s how people choose to define ’secret’, then ours must be the worst kept sercret in the world of search,” continues Mr Cutts.

Ranking Reports – Keeping you in the know.

Friday, October 9th, 2009

One of the key features in relying upon a professional SEO company such as Weblinx for your ethical search engine optimisation campaign is the inclusion of regular ranking reports that give each client a run down of their search engine ranking.

Typically set out in a table template for ease of understanding, each of the ranking reports contains the keywords optimised for the client along with their current and previous search engine positions. Simplified yet informative, we list the change in positions for each keyword across Google UK, Yahoo and MSN(Bing), the page number where the listing is (following the formula that as a default there are 10 results per page of search results on Google for example) and the best organic position that each keyword has acheived.

Not only highly valuable for our clients to keep track of the performance of their website development and search engine optimization campaign, the ranking reports enable Weblinx to keep a careful and personal watch over our clients to actively improve or make fine adjustments to assist in maintaining the best positions year in, year out.
